Rego & RUC Estimator
Estimate your annual vehicle registration and road user charges based on your vehicle type and how far you drive.
In New Zealand, all vehicles pay an annual registration (rego) fee. Diesel vehicles and electric vehicles also pay road user charges (RUC) based on distance travelled. Petrol vehicles don't pay RUC because their road costs are covered through fuel excise duty at the pump.
Use this estimator to get a quick idea of what you'll pay each year in rego and RUC. Note that these are approximate figures — actual costs may vary slightly.
Estimated Annual Costs

Petrol vehicles do not pay RUC — road costs are included in fuel excise duty.
How Rego and RUC Work
Vehicle registration costs approximately $110 per year for a standard passenger vehicle and covers ACC levies and licensing. Road user charges are currently set at around $76 per 1,000 kilometres and apply to diesel vehicles and EVs. You purchase RUC in advance in blocks of 1,000 km.
What About EVs?
Electric vehicles were previously exempt from RUC as part of a government initiative to encourage EV uptake. That exemption has now ended, and EVs pay RUC at the same rate as diesel vehicles. This is an important cost to factor in if you're considering going electric.
